Category and Procurement Specialist Job Description

Grade Level 9 (Exempt)


The position will execute the daily requirements necessary to provide category and procurement administration for the purchasing department.

Reports to:

Purchasing Manager

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research market intelligence for assigned categories.
  • Develop a realistic and effective business plan for assigned categories.
  • Provide analysis and track business plan progress.
  • Work collaboratively with supply chain to insure production requirements are satisfied and eliminate communication gaps regarding dependent material requirements.
  • Identify and recommend potential alternative sources for supply of local needs.
  • Support objectives for reduced lead times, inventories, and improving supplier performance.
  • Foster good vendor relationships to meet operational requirements while focusing on reducing TCO (total cost of ownership).
  • Review and measure vendor performance reports, identify issues and provide recommendations
  • Assist purchasing manager in developing and analyzing requests for proposals (RFP’s) for local needs.
  • Generate, maintain, expedite, and monitor the end to end process of all purchase orders to completion for assigned category in SAP.
  • File electronically needed support documentation in paperless system.
  • Update open order report weekly.
  • Set up new vendors in SAP with required documentation.
  • Process vendor returns.
  • Assist finance department with month, quarter and year end closings.
  • Reconcile and maintain monthly credit card purchases.
  • Assist the raw materials/warehouse departments with any receiving or delivery issues.
  • Perform other duties as required.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in business management, supply chain management, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 3 – 5 years if experience in procurement with an emphasis on category management in SAP or similar operating system.
  • Strong analytical and fact finding capabilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Detailed oriented, strong organization skills with effective results driven execution results.
  • Demonstrated capabilities to be a successful team member.

ISM-Lehigh Valley Members!

With Thanksgiving behind us and the holidays fast approaching, I feel it is appropriate to take a moment to reflect and show appreciation on the many things we all can be thankful for.  We must remember to be grateful to the many opportunities we, as Supply Chain Professionals, have and will be presented to us in the future.

First and foremost, I realize how thankful I am for family. Family is the main support center for all that we do and all that we hope to do in the future. Second, I would like to take this opportunity and let the ISM-Lehigh Valley Board of Directors know how thankful I am for each and every one of them for their dedication and leadership to continue to present excellent subject matter Professional Development Meetings. Third and most importantly, I am thankful for YOU, the membership. For your monthly participation and insightful discussions. We had a very good year in 2017 and plan on continuing in 2018.

Some of our highlights from this past year:

  • We presented four very well qualified MBA students $1,500.00 scholarships each for continuing their Supply Chain Education.
  • We had a very informative tour of Coca-Cola Park, home of the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.
  • Held the 31st annual Ellery T. Royal Memorial Golf Tournament at Beautiful Silver Creek Country Club, in Hellertown, PA. We look forward to your participation for this year’s Golf Tournament to be held on June 4th, 2018.
  • Toured Weyerbacher Brewing Company.
  • Received The 2017 State of the Lehigh Valley Current Trends.
  • And a really big one here…. Re-invented The ISMLV.ORG website.  It looks great and You can renew your membership through this site!
